Video Fix - Bad Cover Monday: Miley Cyrus & Yellowcard Cover Songs And Fail

Some songs should not be covered by certain artists and some songs should not be covered at all and today both cases were brought to my attention. First up, Yellowcard adds to a list of poorly put together covers for Billboard's Mash-Up Monday's series (last week R&B-nobody Jeremih covered Adele's 'Rolling In The Deep' and it still gives me nightmares).

Yellowcard took on Katy Perry's #1 hit 'E.T.' and the question that beckons me is: WHY? Aside from it being the least memorable of the Teenage Dream singles, its simply not cover-worthy. What made the song hot was Kanye West, that bombastic production and a WALL-E/Avatar mash-up video. So Yellowcard doing an acoustic version in a sound studio without Kanye leaves the song feeling empty. Also, lead singer Ryan Key sounds about as bad as Katy does live.

Next up is Disney star turned stripper-look-a-like Miley Cyrus in what I find to be an offensive and unnecessary cover of Fleetwood Mac's 'Landslide'. This song has been covered quite a few times with the Dixie Chicks turning their well executed version into a top 10 hit. It's a cover-worthy song, but not all singers are worthy of covering it. It was never really a vocally challenging song, the song was more about the lyrics and emotion. While Miley's facial expressions suggest she's on an emotional roller coaster when performing the song, what we hear sounds more like an emotionless ferris wheel that broke down.

Besides, what does Miley know about the lyrics of the song? She's freakin' 18 and her transition from Disney sweetheart to blog/tabloid fodder is not quite enough for her to connect with this song on an emotional level. And although I noted the song is not vocally challenging, Miley's less than impressive voice is too challenged itself to even pull off a technically good performance of the song, even if it lacked emotion.
